The Italian Textile Machinery Industry Remains Strong

The Italian textile machinery industry has always been one of the leading players in the global textile machinery market. Today, Italy is the world’s eighth largest textile machinery exporter, with over US$514 billion textile machinery export value registered in 2015.

 

In the worldwide market, global textile machinery will reach US$ 22.9 billion by this year and is estimated to grow at a promising rate of 14.5% from 2015 to 2020, according to the report from the Global Industry Analysts Inc. Italy, as one of the world’s major textile and apparel producers, is also world renowned for manufacturing and exporting some of the main types of textile machinery, namely, spinning, weaving, texturing, and knitting machinery.

 

Currently, Italy holds a strong position as one of the main suppliers of textile machinery in the world, together with Germany, Japan, China and Switzerland. Italy’s market share of the world exports of textile machinery is about 11%. According to the Association of Italian Textile Machinery Manufacturers (ACIMIT), creativity, sustainable technology, reliability and quality are the characteristics that have made Italy a leader in the manufacturing of textile machinery. There are approximately 300 companies who produce textile machines and related accessories, for a total of about 12,000 employees.

 

The Association of Italian Textile Machinery Manufacturers (ACIMIT) also reports that for the period from October to December 2016, the order index for Italian textile machinery rose by 5%, compared to the same period for the previous year. On an annual basis, and compared to 2015, the index registered an average increase of 4%. Domestic sales of textile machinery in Italy also increased significantly, rising by 14%, while international markets recorded a more contained increase of 3%.

 

The Italian textile machinery industry’s largest trading partners are neighboring countries in the European Union, with whom it conducts about 59% of its total trade. The largest trading partners, in order of market share, are Germany (12.6%), France (11.1%), United States (6.8%), Switzerland (5.7%), United Kingdom (4.7%), and Spain (4.4%). Outside of the EU, the largest market for Italian exports of textile machinery is China. In the first six months of 2016, Italian exports to the Chinese market amounted to a value of Euro 152 million, followed by Turkey (Euro 86 million), India (Euro 61 million) and the United States of America (Euro 47 million).
